PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This workshop empowers interpreters to critically assess their clarifying practices, ensuring accurate interpretation while minimizing liability risks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of the workshop attendees will be better able to evaluate their interpreting practices using national standards, with a focus on role boundaries and accuracy.
  • By the end of the workshop attendees will be better able to apply techniques to preserve the integrity of the message without introducing unintended content or omissions.
  • By the end of the workshop attendees will be better able to articulate the professional roles of healthcare and community interpreters, including the nuanced role of clarifier.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Laisson DeSouza is a multilingual leader with over 18 years of experience in language access and business development, Laisson DeSouza specializes in strategic initiatives that enhance quality, accessibility, and engagement across healthcare and education. A certified interpreter in Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilian Sign Language, he is also a trainer of medical and community interpreting programs and the author of How to Teach Medical and Community Interpreting. His work advances interpreter education and empowers multilingual communities through high standards and inclusive practices.

CERTIFICATES & COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

Participants are expected to sign-in and out, attend the entire program, and complete an evaluation. Certificates will be emailed to participants within 20 days from the completion of the training. Participants will not receive a certificate of completion until payment has been received and if the certificate cannot be presented at the event, the participant will be expected to pick up their certificate from Berkshire AHEC.

REFUNDS

Berkshire AHEC does not provide refunds after 10 full calendar days prior to the date of the program. If an individual requests a refund after that due to illness a partial credit towards a conference occurring in the same fiscal year may be issued if Berkshire AHEC is notified before the close of business the day prior to the conference. Credits for cancellation due to illness will only be is-sued once per fiscal year per learner.
